One of my secret weapons when Olan is misbehaving is to threaten to take away storytime at bedtime. The threat of this will usually make him stop whatever he's doing cold. I try to use it only when absolutely necessary, ie: when it's involving danger to his little person. Tonight when we were playing outside he decided it would be hilarious to keep taking off and running away, not so funny when there's two ponds and a road in the works. I pulled out the storytime threat but he decided that he'd push it. Once I captured him we went in and made dinner, it all seemed forgotten.
Enter bedtime.
Olan: Can we read a book Mommy?
Me: No, remember when you weren't listening to Mommy and she told you there would be no story tonight?
Olan: Yes, but I will listen to you next time.
Me: That's great, that makes me very happy.
olan: Can we have a story?
Me: No.
Olan: Sharing a Shell is a good book for boys who are in trouble.
Me (trying desperately not to laugh): Oh, really? But I'm not reading a book tonight.
Olan (looking pensive): I can read by myself you know.
Me: You can read by yourself if you want, but I'm not reading a story.
So he sat there in bed, reading some books for a bit before running into my room to tell me that his books were scaring him and could I come and hug him now please.
